Just got back from the APA seminar in Vegas. It was nice to meet so many polygraph pro's. Also was great to finally put a face on people from this user group. Anyhow just thought it would be a good idea to include a post APA Seminar Las Vegas Review for the list. I had a good time in Vegas (my first time) but thought that the accomodations were lacking and an expensive propostion. Was really upset with the seminar becoming a platform for APA officers seeking re-election ie: keeping the campaigning in the hallways and not the presentation rooms. (Who paid for the political handouts) Shamfull! but we learn and move on. Congrats to the new APA Officers. I would really like to know as to what accomodations went to the APA Officers that the rank and file did not have and if it was at the expense of any perks that could have been provided to all by the LV Hilton? All in all Liked Vegas but wouldn't do the LV Hilton again. Hope others comment on their trip as well... Tony O'Neill IP: Logged |

I also did not like the Hilton! (No coffee makers or fridge) I also felt this conference was not as good as past conferences I have attended. Read Rays posts on UTAH - I too was shocked to learn having sex the night before an exam was a countermeasure (what was that speaker thinking! - has he done research on this issue?). Someone also told me this same speaker started a PCSOT session stating he doesn't follow APA standards and mixes issues on exams! I would have liked to see more classes on countermeasures. I am on the fence about attending next years conference in New Orleans. I heard several people say what a great place New Orleans is and I heard others say there is big time turf wars going on there. Taylor,Don't rule out New Orleans yet. We should ride there. There is an examiner in Colo Spgs who owns a Road King and a Honda ST11 (we'll never keep up with that). r ------------------ "Gentlemen, you can't fight in here, this is the war room." --(Dr. Strangelove, 1964) IP: Logged |

As a resident of the New Orleans area, I'd like to personally invite all of you to our part of this great country. I can promise that you will never go hungry and the party never ends. We still have great food and outstanding people. Katrina may have changed a lot of things in our fair city, but our spirit lives on.An for the motorcycle enthusiast, may I suggest the River Shack in Metairie (suburb of N.O.) on Wednesday nights. It's bike night, and it's electric. Even those who have never sat on a Harley, it's pure fun. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to make the conference this year in L.V., but I'm looking forward to meeting everyone next year. Be safe, Greg IP: Logged |

I too struggled without a coffee maker in the room to give me my morning buzzz.....Once I did get up and going I ended up paying the $2.50 for the 12 oz cup by the seminar rooms..the line at the coffee shop was too steep. Also missed not having free Wi-Fi for my laptop that I lugged through the airports.I guess I found it hard to believe that the Hilton didn't put up some sort of coupons for us for any discounts (shopping, casinos, eateries, transportation etc.) as other places do. You would think with holding such a major conference that they would pull out the plugs and hope for return customers. Wife and I went to other places on the strip and after getting a players club card from most other places we got cash back, discount buffett's, shows, t-shirts etc. This was my first time in LV and all in all I enjoyed it. The seminar was good (couple dropped presenters) and I missed the Sex Countermeasure talk! I was really impressed with Don Krapohls presentation although I had to ask my school director as to why an MZOC with Sky wasn't mentioned as a validated testing technique. Ive never been to New Orleans but hope to be there next year and hopefully the scouting mission by the APA will score the APA membership some perks! I have heard from some people that set up seminars for other associations that when the negotiate with the perspective venue perks are often benefits extended. On the way home I found myself sitting next to a Voice Layered Analysis proponent...What a flight...turned out we both knew the same people from "V" here in Wisconsin.... Tony "Sorry... When Don Krapohl talks about "validated" techniques, he's talking about a technique for which there exists a body of literature (usually, at least three independent, peer-reviewed studies) demonstrating how the technique performs in real use. The ZCT with SKY, to my knowledge, doesn't meet that burden.Keep in mind that a "validated" test doesn't mean it's any good, or the best, it just means what I said above. (You could have three techniques, one validated at 36% accurate (e.g., voice stress), a ZCT at 55% (e.g., some screening tests) and a single-issue ZCT at 90% (e.g., the Utah or Federal)- all are valid, but only the latter works at a rate I'm satisfied with.) Granted, those are different types of tests, but the same can be said if single-issue tests and scoring systems. IP: Logged |

Hi To All Who Went to APA:Just as a tidbit of information for future attendance at APA, you may not always want to "go with" the hotel they choose. There are almost always better places at lesser prices that are within convenient walking distance or short public transportation rides. I stayed across the street from the LV Hilton at the Sahara Hotel & Casino. It was $50 a night cheaper - it was the same quality as a Holiday Inn or Hampton Inn, and it had a coffee maker and it was supplied daily with coffee, cream & sweetners at no extra cost. I also had a refrigerator in the room. I requested it upon check-in, and it was delivered within 40 minutes at no extra cost. It took 12 minutes to walk over to the Hilton or 10 minutes if I took the monorail which had a fair priced unlimited ride ticket. I did the same in Alexandria, Indianapolis, Fort Lauderdale, Albequerque, and Orlando and saved hundreds of dollars each time as well as got some light exercise with the walking (even though it was very hot - it's a cinch for 10 to 15 minutes. I'll add some more when I have some free time to do so concerning the election and some of the information presented. It was difficult for me since both Don and TV are friends of mine and both wanted overt support - and both deserved it so I was in a quandry up to the end of the business meeting. More later and some views on what needs to happen to change some of the things that will make polygraph & APA better. Elmer Criswell (for those who don't know me, I was the Editor of the Polygraph Chronicles for about two years and am the Director of the Pennsylvania State Police/HACC Polygraph Institute at the Northeast Counterdrug Training Center at Fort Indiantown Gap, PA - Barry C's one of our graduates and, inarguably, one of our "shining stars".
